Some thoughts about the main page - your feedback requested

Let me start by saying that I've returned after the launch of the "new" main page and have not participated in much of the debate about it. I think I share many of the feelings expressed by members - some things are better and some can be better executed (a polite way of saying worse).

As I have been entrusted to work on the design of the page, I would like to let you know where I'm headed and get your feedback. First, I've pushed back the "mandatory" switch to a new design by two weeks to give time to improve it.

Of the original page, I like the full "face load" of sexy member photos. Of the new design, I like the energy of the activity feed as it updates in real time. While we are still working of what things show up in the feed and it's design, I think it has potential.

The first part we will focus on is cleaning up the left column of the main page (I've attached a bit of my cleanup). Hopefully, this should go live in a test later this week. Next, we will clean up the "Community" section to get rid of the (silly) top groups, become more a promo section for magazine and blogs (instead of showing 2 blogs there). It's hard to use that space for much more than a promo for now.

I'm looking at a way to put a "Open Mode" button on the top right of the new main page (e.g., to the right of "Live Action" that will convert these 3 tabs to look like the original main page (and turn off the activity feed). Clicking again, goes back to "activity mode". I think this will get the best of both designs.

Finally, we are cleaning up the friend's network to play a bigger part of the main page. Once that is complete, you'll see a third tab to see your friend's activities.

Love to get your thoughts... with apologies beforehand for any stresses the main page "update" has caused.

Thanks for your comments (I will discontinue actively reading comments in this thread but leave it open for members to post - will skim later prior to implementation). Hopefully some changes will go live today on main page... perhaps on Monday/Tues tho.

Great post. I know some members have concerns about the main page and pushing the start date back to adjust some items on the page is a great idea. Posted this news to the AdultFriendFinder is Listening group also.

Since the activities takes up prime real estate on the main page, I would prefer to see the activity updates of those in my friends network. I'm so happy that to see that a new tab is going to be added.

Will the last tab choice going to be remembered when we close the browser or log out, or do we have to click on the tab each and every time? Can we have a settings in Preferences to choose which tab should show by default? I'm all for seeing friends' updates, but have no interest whatsoever in knowing that some random stranger uploaded a new cock/pussy pic.

How hard would it be to add another tab in that section that shows the previews of new messages?

We might have the tab settings be remembered... one step at a time.

You will be excited to know about the upcoming global filter setting that will block full frontal cock/pussy shots... coming in a couple days!

We are updating the Message Center now... hopefully will be better

I felt forced to switch to the new page, because otherwise I had to deal with a huge menu that folded down until I clicked it to go away. I personally am not a fan of the new main page. The list on the left side is all bunched together, where it was easier to see and navigate before. So I'm glad to see that there will be improvements.

I'd much prefer to see my friend activities, rather than "global" as I don't care for that. I'm also interested in seeing the activities of those on my hotlist.

Hello, just wanted to thank you for coming back to help out with the site functioning. This site really needs some fixing here. There are so many things that have gone wrong here. I like to make this a better site for all of us to use. Far as the main page glad you delayed the launch to give it more time for all of us to get use to the idea. I think things need to change as long it is done the right way not the wrong way.

I am not interested in global activities. I would like to see my friends activities but only at my choosing, not in the center of the page all the time.
I turn off the activities on the current home page. Would like to turn off activities on the new home page if possible.

Is it possible to revert to the old practice off page turning..

These days if we click on any profile while on who's online page, we get sent back to the first page after opening/reading the profile. Instead where we last stop... It's so maddening to start from page one again... Thanks.

Andrew replies on 2/28/2013 8:13 am:
I recently heard about this issue from one of the developers. While I don't have an estimate to when this will be resolved, they are working on it. As a workaround, you can right-click on the listing and open a new tab for each profile you want to view. I often do this... as it's faster to open up a few profiles while you skim a search result.

One of the ongoing problems I have noticed that never seem to get corrected is the dropping of letters when I am trying to type in a post in the chat room. At times it appears about every fourth letter is dropped and I have to back up and retype super slowly.

I'm writing this via the Passion site because today the member login from the AdultFriendFinder page doesn't work this morning.

Basically, you've got a lot of different people here - and they all want different things so it would be nice if the "tabs" arrangement was something that was remembered by the profile - cookies are no good because a lot of us delete them when we close the browser, not just for this site but for all sites.

How does Various look at this site? Is it "paying members" vs "non-paying members" - or "content providers" vs "consumers"? I think the latter is the better model but the way the site works makes me think the former is the ruling view.

The landing page here is - because this is seen as a "sex" site full of pictures ... but I think that you're leaving a lot of money on the table by ignoring the bloggers - how about being able to customize the tabs to show blogs? Like a tab for new blogs, popular blogs, followed blogs, etc. Has Various not noticed that 50 Shades of Gray has changed the market? Do they not know about Tumblr? The site is so busy chasing the "sex and fucking" hopefuls that the blogs get totally forgotten.

I have to admit that when you added "bling" to the site some years I was thinking that you'd lost your mind - but in retrospect, seeing the level of artistry and talent that emerged with the new tool ( and even playing with it myself ) I have to admit a lot of respect for your handle on the users desires here. What do you think would happen if the bloggers could format their blog page to look more like the home page here - not limited to a single blog stream but with multiple streams ... personally I'd pay for a decent blog facility here and I suspect many of us would - let the standard members keep the existing creation tools but read everything and allow the paying members access to a really good blog format.

luvpump replies on 2/28/2013 8:57 am:
We think pretty alike here. I wrote the blog software and most of the group software... and am keen on improving the experience for community-minded members. The challenge of putting more blog info on the main page is that putting a mini list of things (e.g., use 1/2 the page) ends up just being a jumping point to get to the blog main page. However, I am working to add more numbers/counts to the main page (in time). Thanks re: bling... I like them too

Something else I'd like to see fixed is the "Your membership expires/Autorenew is set to" notification permanent on the front currently disappears if Autorenew is set to "ON". Furthermore, in addition to disappearing from the home page, it automatically switches to "ON" when you buy a paid membership, even if it was set to "OFF."
LEAVE IT THE WAY THE MEMBER SETS IT! And make it prominently displayed on the member's home page.

I actually like the new homepage, not necessarily the activity feed of people that are so far away from me that I scratch my head though. What I find a bit frustrating is that when on my iPad using the Desktop view, if I click anything on the homepage other than the very top navigation bar, I am converted to the mobile version...I kinda wish that didn't happen. A link to change to mobile version might be nice, just as I can click to use the desktop version...

This has to be the NUMBER ONE thing that pisses people off here - you know, we all understand that the site wants to generate income but seriously, you this costs you more members than it gains you. Some years ago I had a Gold Membership here and followed the rules, blogging and emailing to get the additional bonus months having enrolled and paid via credit card ... and at the end of the period (I wasn't keeping track - bad me) the site just started auto-renewing me every month ... so after 10 months I was looking back through my credit card statements and found I'd paid nearly $300 for the site, one month at a time. Can you say CANCEL?

You have to ask yourself - what's the customer experience like here? If this was a restaurant, would you come back? These aren't just rhetorical questions - they go to the root of why you have so many standard members.

Just because this is a "sex site" doesn't mean that we don't deserve respect - and so often ( and this is NOT a personal comment at all ) we don't feel like we get any.

luvpump replies on 2/28/2013 9:02 am:
I never think of this site as a sex site... it is a community site for people who are open minded and enjoy their sexuality (and checking out hot people). I'll ask about the renewal policy and how it's presented.

Using Chrome and being a standard member. My friend would like to report this one.

The upgrade button is over the view all members for mods to be able get to the banning screens. We have an issue with the new home pages if you log on via chrome and are a standard member.

A great welcome back to someone who really knows what this site should be about.

You mention the Message Center.
There is a major problem with the current one!
On the old (proper) system, when a spammer had their profile removed (for Charge Card Fraud), the text of the messages they sent dissapeared to be replaced in your inbox page with something like
"Member removed for Abuse"

If you can look at my Message Canter, the top 10 messages are all pasted Soliciting ones from Card Fraudsters who've had their profiles removed, sometimes before I got the alert that a new message was waiing.
I can still see the messages, with the details of the other websites that they're trying to con me into visiting.
Please kich a*se and arrange for messages from fraudsters to be made invisible as soon as their profiles are removed.

Thank you for that - it reminds me of the line from Miss Congeniality, "This is a Scholarship Program, NOT a Beauty Pageant" - and you're right, that's how I see it too ... Now, how do we work on getting the rest of the world to see it the same way?

Also a link that takes me directly to my own blog.
A link to the groups i'm in would also be helpful on the homepage.

25 flirted with me.

How many of those flirts were from Fakes???

But more likely all 25!

As a matter of interest, and to me at least, some amusement... I notice that they now state - "The older version of the homepage may be retiring on March 15, 2013" .... Note the use of the words 'MAY BE' The 'old' homepage was to be retired on the 1st March... we'll see what happens tomorrow !

Anderw, I'd like to welcome you back. I'm not the only one that feels this way from what I've read but things went to hell in a hand basket when you left and Penthouse took over.

I've been a Gold Paying member for a very long time, not as long as Koffla, but still a long time, and I agree with everything he said. I do have some issues as do others. A few weeks ago I wasn't able to see the old home page. The prompts to take me back didn't work. I called customer service the man I spoke to didn't know what he was doing, nor do most of the people trying to help you. If something doesn't work just clear out your cookies, and cache. This might help in some cases but not all. When I told him that wasn't the cause he did nothing but argue with me. I must not of been the only one to complain because the problem was fixed with in two hours.

The second problem I have that for some reason most of my setting have been changed, from the activities, to my renewal date. I for one would like to see the activities area go away. I don't like it, and I don't use it.

About the redesign of the home page. I like the way I can see everything at a glimpse on the old homepage. I don't like having to click on one tab to see this, and then click on another take to see something else. I don't see how that's an improvement over the current homepage. On the new home page it gives me things that I could care less about. I dislike the Members Activity, Global, Near You, and Community on the new home page. This is nothing but distracting, and again I have to go from one tab to another to get where I want to so. This makes no rhyme or reason to me.

The new mail feature is terrible. I always thought you should be able to keep any emails you got for as long as you wanted. I did not like that after three months? they were taken away. I also don't like the fact that if I want to attach my profile to an email I can no longer do it. The previous version was just fine, so why change it?

I use to blog quite a bit but stopped, and now I go to my favorite bloggers read what they have to say, and make comments. But from what I'm reading here most of the complaints your getting are from the bloggers. I'm sorry to burst their bubble but there are others on the site that don't blog that are unhappy with things too. It's time they listen to all not just bloggers. This is a social site as you said, it's not just a bloggers site as I would believe after reading many of the comments.

Again, it's good to have you back. I hope you stay for a long time, and change AdultFriendFinder back into the site it use to be. Again, I think Koffla said it very well "It think your timing is too little too late. AdultFriendFinder with their lousy service and incompetence already lost a huge chunk of their long term loyal paying customers. I've been here long enough [13 years as a gold member] to know nothing will ever change, in fact, they are worse than ever.

Ever heard of "never bite the hand that feeds you, because it will be the same hand that chokes you to death?" The site is grasping at straws. The site basic functionality issues are the worst I've ever seen in this place, too many site problems. It will take a complete site overhaul and working basic features for me to pay ever again.

Talk is cheap, I'll believe it when I see it. Welcome back."

Thank you for taking the time to listen.

I am now having trouble(totally unable) accessing the message center with Firefox browser. Never had the problem before. The new home page is too damned busy! There's just too much there. I don't care about "international member activity"! I don't care that it's "live" and no, it doesn't add to the "energy" - it just makes this seem more like the fake sites that are just trying to get credit card info.

Who really wants add space on the home page? I don't like looking at drawings of penis/penii - what's the point of having a filter for pictures but no filter for the ads?

There's no colour, no life. The fonts are too small and bold. The icons on the left column hurt the eyes after a while - try it! See how long it takes before your eyes don't like the very stark contrast of a boring white background and those tiny bold black icons!

And again, get rid of the "porn stars hate him" ads... Totally classless, and quite frankly, totally gay.

Needs a rethink.

How about an option for paying members not to see those worthless and hateful ads? There's nothing wrong with the size of my penis, and I resent paying to see ad after ad after ad suggesting there is!

This time, new layout ... no "view webcam" link on the profile.
